All right, I’m willing to go along with the view that humankind is the product of accident. But if that’s it, then the accident is of a very specific kind: derailment. Clever as we are, we have succeeded in throwing the switches of evolution and running ourselves right off the rails of nature. As the self-appointed ‘crowning glory of creation’, we have succeeded in polluting the planet, including its atmosphere, so badly that it is killing us. Welcome to the Anthropocene.

‘FLORES MAN HAD REDUCED BRAIN’

Tokyo – 17 April 2013.

The brain of the dwarf-like humans who lived some 18,000 years ago on the Indonesian island of Flores probably shrank in the course of evolution . . . The finding would seem to indicate that Flores Man was a dwarf version of the archaic human species Homo erectus. This conclusion was reached by researchers from the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo. (NU.nl online newspaper)
